East Brighton - Moulsecoomb

Moulsecoomb History
Our church is based in Moulsecoomb, which is a housing estate in the heart of East Brighton. Moulsecoomb has 3 main areas, Bates estate, North Moulsecoomb and East Moulsecoomb.
In the 1920s, what we now know as Moulsecoomb was open downland with the valley bottom sheltering a string of nurseries and market gardens. The land was acquired by the borough in a 'land grab' and the estate of Moulsecoomb was developed from 1924. Therefore, this year is Moulsecoomb's 84th birthday.
East Moulsecoomb was were the first roads were constructed. The initial build consisted of; The Avenue, Colbourne Avenue, The Crescent, The Highway, Hillside, Southall Avenue and Natal Road. The buildings were intended as 'homes for heroes with The Avenue even having tennis courts erected.
The North Moulsecoomb estate of 390 houses followed in 1926-30, on 46 acres acquired in October 1925, but was developed to a higher density than East Moulsecoomb, this could be a factor to some the social problems experienced there.
Moulsecoomb estate as we now know it was completed in the 1950's with Halland road and the Bates estate flats.
It is said the word Moulsecoomb orginates from the personal name 'Mul'.
